The Robotics Club has taken matters to the next level this year by building not just the “usual” one robot but two robots for the first time in Eaglebrook Robotics history. This ambitious project of the second robot has been the main focus for the team members this term, as we worked on fine-tuning the code and cutting down on driver-related issues and mechanical issues. After the finalist alliance finished at the end of the winter term using the first bot, the coders in our group spent countless hours fine-tuning the software to improve the overall performance and reliability of the second robot. Their goal has been to make the robot easier to control and more responsive for the drivers, who have also been increasing and practicing their coordination skills with their co-driver.
The drivers have been hard at work every weekend practicing maneuvers, as well as going over their game plans and strategies. The robot is controlled by 2 separate controllers, with one linked to the body and movement of the base, while the other one is in charge of the exchange system (the arm that picks up the block and the linear slide that deposits it).
In addition to preparing for the competition, the other club members have been learning new skills, such as CAD (computer-aided design), as well as coding from the ninth graders, our seniors, in preparation for next year. Mr. Huang, our faculty sponsor and leader, also has plans to improve the club’s outreach and create a website page for the team, with all the team info, roster, and more. The club, led by Mr. Paul Huang ’86, has been growing in the spring as well, with a new influx of members who are eager to join and be a part of the team next year. With the upcoming and final competition of the year on May 11, we will continue to work on the second bot and see if it is reliable enough to compete.
