At Eaglebrook, the Chess Club has become a thriving hub for students passionate about strategy, focus, and friendly competition. Open to players of all skill levels, the club meets regularly on Mondays and Saturdays, offering a welcoming environment for both beginners and seasoned players.
Led by faculty advisor Mr. Goodrow, the Chess Club emphasizes both learning and enjoyment. Weekly meetings include casual matches, puzzle challenges, and lessons on tactics, openings, and endgame strategies. Students sharpen their critical thinking skills while developing patience and sportsmanship, values that align closely with Eaglebrook’s educational mission.
The weekly WEAs on Saturdays have allowed students to play friendly matches against their peers. It has been extremely rewarding to see the progression of the students who have been improving through their constant training. A highlight of the year has been the creation of a weekly online tournament series. Every Monday at 4:00 p.m., Eaglebrook students compete against players from other schools in an online format. These matches allow students to test their abilities against a broader range of opponents, gain valuable tournament experience, and represent Eaglebrook in a growing Chess community. After many attempts to win the tournament, we finally won first place thanks to Miguel Margain ’26, Sebastian Chen ’27, and Chase Lee ’27. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, the Chess Club has achieved great success, and I am proud to be a part of it.
Students have described the weekly Chess Club meetings as their favorite part of the week, giving them time to relax, think deeply, and enjoy the camaraderie of a shared passion. With a growing interest in chess across the world, Eaglebrook plans to offer even more opportunities, including special workshops with guest players. Whether aiming for success at a tournament or simply enjoying the quiet thrill of the game, students find the Chess Club a place where strategy and community come together.
