No other tennis team feels more like a family than JV1. In this team, we support and care for each other while competing in a fair rivalry for the team’s ranking by playing challenge matches. We all thank our coaches, Mr. Trimbach-Rios and Ms. Morsman, for their unwavering support in helping us improve as players.
There are 10 players specifically on the JV1 team, which is highly competitive even to join the team, as the sport of tennis itself is not a team sport, and therefore, it does not take as many players as other sports, such as lacrosse.
Challenge matches are singles pro-set matches, commenced weekly, where players compete to determine the ranking ladder in the team. In every challenge match, the challenger is ranked lower than the person he is challenging. If the challenger wins, he replaces the person being challenged with the higher ranking by 1. For example, if #7 on the team challenges #6 and wins, he takes #6’s place as the new #6, and the old #6 goes down to #7.
Every week, we also have games against other schools, home or away. There are usually two doubles games and six singles games against other schools that provide the same player layout. It is perfectly normal to get nervous during matches, but this hampers players from playing in their best form, which can result in a loss. This has happened to me in many personal cases due to a less confident mindset. I suggest thinking of the matches as a practice and working on your mentality to handle loss, because tennis is a very mental sport.
