Eaglebrook’s Debate Club is an opportunity for prospective debaters to enter the immersive world of Debate and a bridge that connects the debating community. From public forums to extemporaneous speeches, the club covers a wide range of Debate formats and topics.
This fall, the Debate Club will kick off strong by participating in a Model United Nations conference. The focus of this trimester, Model United Nations, or Model UN, is a speech competition in which teams represent a designated country as its delegate. In short, each team participates in a simulation of the actual United Nations and comes together to discuss an essential global issue.
During the winter trimester, the Debate Club will aim to develop the fundamentals of Debate and begin to work on advancing their Public Speaking abilities. Meetings with practices where debaters can train against each other will become frequent. Often, Ms. Pleasant, the coach of the Debate Club at Eaglebrook, will provide debaters with feedback and constructive criticism at the end of the scrimmage.
In the spring, debaters will have the opportunity to demonstrate their improvement by competing in various tournaments. These competitions include the annual Eaglebrook intramural Debate competition and scrimmages against a local school. For instance, the Debate team traveled to St. Sebastian’s for a tournament last year, competed against secondary schools and placed high in the rankings.
The Debate Club is an excellent opportunity for both new and seasoned debaters. New debaters are welcome, and there is room for everyone to participate, regardless of experience. Seasoned debaters can continue to become even stronger competitors by participating in the many drills organized by Ms. Pleasant and by gaining more competitive experience in debate tournaments.
