The Sustainability Committee is Eaglebrook’s environmental organization that strives to raise awareness about global and local issues among the student body. The committee is mainly led by students, with various leaders from multiple forms coming up with and leading new challenges and ideas.
It also remains one of the largest committees at Eaglebrook, with many students contributing to Sustainability in some shape or form. At its core, the committee revolves around our weekly Thursday meetings after classes and after dinner. Sometimes, new ideas are presented, and other times, committee members work on existing projects.
The committee has brought different vital topics to life, including food and electrical usage, dorm competitions around Sustainability, and morning assemblies, including one about a sustainability conference. One of the highlights last year was the Summit trip to Northfield Mount Hermon, where experts spoke on topics ranging from renewable energy to advocating through art for sustainability.
The Sustainability Committee orchestrates many challenges like food waste, recycling, and electricity challenges. These challenges help promote dorm sustainability and incentivize students to participate with a prize for the winning dorm. The Sustainability Committee has created many activities to help with sustainability at Eaglebrook, including Meatless Mondays, which limits the amount of red meat that Eaglebrook uses, as well as during many school events like Country Fair and Winter Carnival, the students are encouraged to use recycled materials as they decorate their posters or sleds.
Each dorm has two to three sustainability leaders, so all the students can learn about what they can do to become more sustainable and be encouraged to participate in the sustainability challenges.
The Sustainability Committee has many enthusiastic students who want to help change the world. From sharing their ideas to contributing to activities, the Sustainability Committee has allowed students to use their creativity to help make Eaglebrook a more sustainable school.
