Cross Country is a rigorous sport that requires a tremendous amount of endurance and mental strength. A typical day is running two laps around the track as a warm-up. This light but intense jog lets us loosen up for our mile runs. We then do our dynamic stretches, during which line leaders are assigned to help guide the students in performing a comprehensive stretching routine. We do butt kicks, high knees, leg sweeps, A jumps, karaoke, and much more.
For those who need to learn what karaoke is, it’s not singing with your friends. This exercise is a back-and-forth motion of your feet to gain fast reflexes and strengthen your ankles. A jump is not a commonly known stretch. It resembles a Mario hop and helps us maintain our posture while stretching our legs and knees. Stretching is very important for Cross Country runners as it is easy to hurt ourselves if not performed carefully.
We run around two to two-and-a-half miles every day. This practice may seem strenuous, but daily running helps us practice and improve our endurance. We split our team into three sections: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Thirds.
Varsity runs longer and at a faster pace, which makes it physically taxing. As a team, we all help and support each other through the rigorous lengths we run daily. We journey off campus for some practices to train in a different environment and become accustomed to new trails.
We thank our coaches for supporting and helping us through this grueling season: Mr. Keane, Ms. Adawiya, Mr. Bedell, Mr. Hill, Mr. Mandell ’00, Mr. Manto, and Mr. McClure.
