Water polo is a big deal at our school, and I’m proud to be part of the Junior Varsity team. Even though we don’t have games coming up soon, we’re working ambitiously to get better. Our team has coaches who make every practice count. We’ve got a great team this year. There’s Trevor B. ’27, Charles B. ’27, Vijay C. ’26, Brian D. ’28, Kevin H. ’26, Jaden M. ’27, Maxx Zihan Q. ’27, Rintaro Y. ’27, and Anthony Z. ’27. Everyone is pushing hard to improve, and it’s incredible to see the progress. Our coaches, Head Coach Russ and Coach Jodka, are the best. Coach Russ, a UMass Hall of Famer, always finds a way to make us better players.
Every practice, the coaches have us warm up while swimming, which helps to improve our strength and endurance. Our drills are all about getting us to master the fundamentals, such as passing, shooting, and playing as a team. We practice throwing the ball at each other in the deep end of the swimming pool, which helps us handle the ball better while treading water. Then, we do shooting drills where we swim with the ball and try to score. It’s challenging, but our coaches have taught us how pushing ourselves to the limit will make us better players every time, so we know we are getting better. The best part of practice is the scrimmage at the end. It is competitive and shows us how much we’ve improved. Even though we don’t have any games soon, we’re always getting better and working as a team. Every practice, every drill, and every lap in the pool makes us stronger. We’re all looking forward to showing what we can do next year.
