The Sustainability committee is a group of students led by a faculty advisor who all share the same objective of promoting a sustainable, ecofriendly campus and a place for sustainable practices. To achieve this goal, the team gathers weekly and develops initiatives for the trimester. Moreover, the group also provides ambitious challenges, diverse projects, and engaging assemblies that all support Sustainability, such as the Electricity Challenge, Conferences with other schools, and the Fill it Forward event.
As the year begins, the team wastes no time taking the initiative. Within the first couple of weeks of the school year, the committee builds on last year’s work to ensure a successful trimester. The committee’s efforts are evident across campus, from recycling initiatives to school-wide projects.
For instance, on Saturday, September 27, Sustainability members participated in a Source to Sea Cleanup event where students visited the Connecticut River and helped clean up the riverside. Over 20 students joined and created a lasting influence. Furthermore, the trip was particularly impactful because the students visited a museum connecting the initiative of community service and Sustainability through the event.
Another significant example would be the committee’s Sustainability Assembly. This Assembly has become well known by the students and faculty through its appeal and has become an annual tradition. For the Committee members, this assembly is a great opportunity for them to discuss their views and spread awareness about Sustainability in their own unique way. This year, we have around ten presenters who hope to deliver a meaningful message to others.
All these factors and details allow the committee to be as meaningful as it is. As the trimester progresses, the committee hopes to see new members and various positive ways the community contributes to sustainable practices.
