Thirds lacrosse is a spring sport offered at Eaglebrook, focused on helping players, whether new to the sport or having some experience, build a solid foundation and further their passion for lacrosse. Every single player on the team is working diligently to improve their skills.
Mr. Forys and Mr. Weischelbaumer ’16 are the coaches for Thirds lacrosse this year, and they care deeply about the team and strive to help all the players get better. The coaches focus on teaching the fundamentals of lacrosse, which include passing, cradling, and shooting. These skills have carried over to more advanced drills, such as the real-game scenarios that the team does near the middle or end of practice. Practice starts off with the whole team lining up in two neat lines, then running a lap around Upper Upvall. The team then performs various warm-up exercises and splits into groups by position.
Attackers and midfielders split into 4 groups, with one group passing or rolling a groundball to the other group, then switching to their less-dominant hand. The defenders do something similar, but also practice other drills that train their stick control and defensive skills, such as drawing shapes around others’ arms. The goalie gets to practice saving shots from the coaches. After this, the team gets together to practice game scenarios such as 1v1s, 4v3s, 6v6s, and more.
In our first game against Bement on April 15th, the whole team played hard and demonstrated the skills learned in practice, showing immense improvement. Unfortunately, we lost to Bement by one point. The team is looking forward to playing them again on the 29th. Thirds lacrosse will also be playing Cardigan on May 9th and 16th.
