Ultimate Disc is a fast-paced game that many say resembles football. The sport is focused on sportsmanship and fun. The practice starts at 3:15 and finishes around 4:30. During the first half of the season, the team focused on the fundamentals of the sport, like the proper way to throw, how to catch, and the basic rules of the game.
During this half of the season, practice usually starts with a 5-minute warm-up consisting of running and dynamic stretches. Afterward, a partner practices throwing and catching, then eventually moves on to drills to improve our fundamentals with the team. The team doesn’t focus much on scrimmages, since many of our beginners would still be struggling with the basics.
The second half of the season changes a bit. Players start to focus on more advanced skills: how to dive, strategies on offense and defense, and more complex movements. Once we get here, the warmup becomes longer, and more scrimmages happen to apply newly learned skills in game situations.
The sport of Ultimate Frisbee is based on sportsmanship, and that is where our returners come in. While our newcomers start to get used to the sport, our returners, primarily Sixth and Fifth Formers, regularly befriend and assist them, giving them advice, showing them proper technique, and constantly encouraging them. As the season progresses, many Fifth Formers take up leadership roles. They help coaches with practices and become role models for the Third and Fourth Formers.
The team will play roughly 10 games in the 25-26 season. Schools we play against include Deerfield Academy, The Bement School, The Academy School at Charlemont, Westmoreland School, and Westminster School. There are no referees in games, and players practice integrity, making their own calls. Either a win or a loss, both teams are respectful and accept the outcome peacefully. Ultimate is a fun sport based on leadership and sportsmanship with some competition mixed in, making it an exciting and easygoing sport to play.
