This year, the Varsity tennis team consists of coaches Mr. Carter Townsend ’88, Mr. Robert Trimbach-Rios, and, for players, we have Frank Zhang ’26, Yuzu Emoto ’26, Ari Seol ’26, Joey Holland ’26, Lucio Li ’28, Port Cameron ’28, Jack Villamizar ’28, Maxx Qin ’27, and team manager, Monty Vanderwilt ’28.
Varsity tennis tryouts are quite unique. Everyone who signs up has a chance. On the first day, the coaches place you with people at your level to rally and serve with, so they can get an idea of your skill set. On the second day, some players go to JV1, while the others do more rallying and a game, allowing coaches to see their personality and how they treat the other players.
On the 3rd day, you receive an email if you are still in the tryouts, letting you know you have a round robin to complete against the others. Usually, it is among 16 or fewer people, and the person with the fewest points at the end of the round robin goes down to JV1. This is so that the people on Varsity are very comfortable with matches, and so the coaches know they are all-around players. To start off our season, we are 2-3, winning against Deerfield Academy (DA) and Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH). We are preparing for the upcoming Fessenden Tournament.
To start our practices, we have a rule that every minute you’re late, you get to run one lap around the courts, which is a good warm-up for everyone. We then ease into rallying with each other before either having a day where we challenge up or where we drill. At the end of practices, we include games like Touch The Fence or Around the World, as they’re a fun way to ease into the end of practice.
