For the past 27 years, Ms. McAvoy has been an English teacher at Eaglebrook School. This will be her final year teaching here, as she will be retiring. We will definitely miss Ms. McAvoy and the joy that she adds to our community. Ms. McAvoy was born and raised in New York. Early on in her life, Ms. McAvoy was schooled in public schools, and later studied at Northfield Mount Hermon for her junior and senior years. Then, she attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where she majored in French and medieval studies to earn her Bachelor of Arts.
Since Ms. McAvoy was raised outside New York City in a cooperative community, she is drawn to boarding schools, especially the communities within them. Because of this, she worked at NMH after college, then at The Masters School in NYC, and finally at Riverdale Country School. After that, Ms. McAvoy went to graduate school at Hunter College to earn her Master of Arts in Teaching, and then taught at Cushing Academy before coming to Eaglebrook with her husband, Mr. Landenberger and two young children, John ’09 and Amelia ’11.
Not only is Ms. McAvoy a teacher, but she is also an excellent performer. She is a folksinger and has played locally and in concerts. Some of her fondest memories include performing at the Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Fest in La Veta, CO, in 2009 and 2011.
Ms. McAvoy also says that she really enjoys teaching because it feels like a different journey every day. She loves being part of the Eaglebrook community, whether with her colleagues or her students. She also enjoys sharing ideas she is passionate about and influencing other students. Ms. McAvoy says she will deeply miss being part of the Eaglebrook community, away from her colleagues and students, and will feel like something is missing. Farewell, Ms. McAvoy. It will feel like something is missing without you, too.
